Correct hair washing: rules and tips to keep in mind

Although often seen as a straightforward hair cleaning operation, the primary role of washing your hair is to maintain its health and vitality. To achieve this, it's not enough to wash your hair just when you deem it necessary; you need to follow certain rules regarding both the frequency and the method of washing.

At first glance, it seems simple, yet there are many men who are unaware of these rules or who ignore them, thinking that their hair isn't long enough to require special attention.

Paraphrasing a famous refrain, we could say that "it doesn't matter how long your hair is" when it comes to its care. Below, we'll show you how you should proceed to keep it healthy and shiny. Or, simply, to keep it—since proper washing can also prevent hair loss.

Use lukewarm water

Hot water can easily damage hair strands, while water that is too cold doesn't sufficiently soften the layer of sebum accumulated on the scalp, and thus it isn't fully cleaned after washing.

Therefore, it's recommended to wash your hair with lukewarm water, which also helps open the pores in the hair strands, implicitly allowing better absorption of the active substances in the shampoo and conditioner applied after washing.

When rinsing, you should use slightly cooler water because this closes the pores, thereby aiding in the assimilation of the previously mentioned substances.

Shampoo twice

Even if your hair appears clean, you should apply shampoo twice during each wash, and if necessary, you can even go for a third round. The first dose of shampoo serves to de-grease the hair and scalp, while the next dose cleanses deep.

It's also important what product you use because there are several types of shampoo, and you need to choose the one that best suits your hair.

Additionally, you should know that shampoo is applied to the scalp, at the root of the hair strands, not along the length of them. Also, during washing, thoroughly massage the scalp, including the nape and behind the ears, without focusing on the hair strands. For washing these, the shampoo foam that drips down during rinsing is sufficient.

Use hair conditioner

After washing your hair with shampoo, it's preferable to apply a conditioner to provide extra protection and nutrients, to keep it healthy.

Unlike shampoo, hair conditioner is applied along the entire length of the hair strands, avoiding application at the root or on the scalp. Then, let it sit for a few minutes to work, after which rinse the hair again with slightly cooler water, as explained earlier.

Don't tug at tangled strands

If you wear your hair a bit longer, the strands may get tangled, especially if you have curly or wavy hair. Wet hair detangles much easier, so this problem can be solved during washing.

If you don't succeed on the first try, don't force it by pulling too hard on the hair strands or twisting them. Wet hair is more fragile, and doing so risks breaking it or causing it to tangle even more.

The best approach is to use combs or brushes, which detangle hair much more easily than you can do with just your fingers.

Avoid daily washing

Although it might seem harmless to wash more frequently, when it comes to hair washing, heed the traditional wisdom that "too much of a good thing is a bad thing." Specifically, hair washing should not coincide with daily showers and is preferably done 1-2 times a week.

Even though it's considered unesthetic, the sebum produced on the scalp serves to protect the roots and hair strands, so it's recommended to remove it only when it accumulates excessively.

For people with oily hair, this happens more rapidly, whereas for those with dry hair, sebum accumulation occurs more slowly. Normal hair shows visible signs of oiliness after 7-10 days, so a weekly wash should suffice. If you have very oily hair, you might wash it every 3-4 days, possibly using a shampoo designed to reduce sebum secretion.

Apply other hair care products after complete washing

Among all hair maintenance products, shampoo is the only one recommended for washing, while the rest should be applied to clean hair, immediately after washing or afterward.

These products also help maintain the hair's health and shine, but only if used according to their specific instructions, and certainly not during washing.

For example, hair gel—one of the most well-known hair care products—is applied to clean, perfectly dry hair, just like hair wax and oils, or volumizing powder.

As you can see, these are simple tips, easy to remember and put into practice, so we advise you to keep them in mind whenever your hair needs washing.
